HOME STUDY/ QUALIFICATION
Visit our TESTIMONIALS page to see what other parents have experienced.
The home study process is the means by which you become eligible for adoption. This process is a legal requirement of adoption for all prospective adoptive parents with a few exceptions; step-parents do not need a home study. The Adoption & Family Support Center, a licensed child placing agency, can conduct your Domestic or International home study if you live in Florida.
The home study is your first step. Many adoption professionals will limit their relationship with you until you are "paper ready". Call us today so we can answer your questions and help you begin your adoption journey.
Within the home study process, the individual and family background information of the prospective adoptive family is gathered – usually through a variety of paperwork. You will be asked to answer many questions about yourselves and your family in either essay or question & answer form.
Other documentation will be asked for, such as references, work and insurance verifications, financial statements, copies of marriage license, birth certificates, divorce decrees and income tax forms.
You will be asked to have physicals done and to complete paperwork allowing background screenings through law enforcement and the abuse registry in your state, and possibly FBI fingerprinting.
The home study process (including paperwork, home visits, background clearances, etc.) is an assessment of the prospective adoptive parents' home and family readiness to adopt. While the goal is to qualify families for adoption, the reality is that some families are not able to be qualified due primarily to certain abuse of criminal history. If you have known offenses, disclosing them to your social worker at the start of the process may save you time and money. Not all criminal or abuse records will disqualify you for adoption. Give us a call and we can provide confidential answers to your questions.
During the qualification period, the home study specialist will conduct one or more home visits with you, after which a home study report is written. The written report is what most people think of as the home study, but it is the work before the report that truly comprises the home study. The report produced must also meet the criteria set forth by your state and your adoption agency. This process may seem a bit overwhelming but we can help you through it.
